Week One went okay. I decided to start “slow” and just do a week of ‘review and introductions’ to old/new material. The week went well up ’til Thursday, when Boo decided she wasn’t feeling too well. I told her that if she didn’t want to rest/sleep, she could read/quiz some of the picture books that we still have. Friday would have been the ‘make up’ day; however, I went to my sister’s house to help her prior to our Open House (she is a Beauti-Control Consultant and I am a Home and Garden Party Designer) on Saturday. Just in case you were curious, we had a great time, although we only had two people show up to the Open House (one relative and one close friend).

I checked out 100 Best Books for Children by Anita Silvey and noticed that we had read several of the books listed – – and the ones I HAD read WERE good – – so I made copies of the list at the back of the book: “Beyond the 100 Best.” Essentially, it is a list of the authors favorite books for children. I thought it would give us a place to start – – and a goal to accomplish. As of today, (9/8/2008), Boo has read 44 of the listed books. I’ve checked out MOST of the “picture books” and we are actually going to read some of the other books for the historical fiction read-alouds for the year. I am really excited about the books we have read together, so far – – I am totally looking forward to more!!! If you are curious as to what she has read (with her recommendations), click here. Wow, what an amazing summer, so far. I was a little concerned about how our summer would progress, as the last three summers, Boo had spent in Colorado with her God-Parents. Since her God-Parents and I are no longer on speaking terms, and we were not able to work out some sort of {relationship} solution with Boo, she got to spend the entire summer home with Mamma and Pappa!! Well, next week, she will be with Oma and Opa – – so, ALMOST the entire summer. LOL! : ) I figured that I would start the new school year after Labor Day, as starting prior to that, is one of my pet peeves with our Public School System. I am still working out our plans for the year – – but, I will say that I am looking at doing American History as the base for all studies. I hope I can find all of the resources that will fit not only the topic, but, her learning style and her academic level(s). Once I feel comfortable with all of the resources, I will probably post some sort of blog about it – – either just kinda explaining what we will do – – or possibly posting a schedule. I am also considering some sort of schedule that rotates certain subjects – – so we aren’t bogged down all day (or at least I won’t FEEL like we are bogged down).
In any case, without further ado, here our AAR for the period 5/26/2008 through 8/1/2008:
